Gabriel Maralngurra has depicted female Mimih spirits in this dynamic design. According to the Kunwinjku people of western Arnhem Land, Mimih spirits were the original spirit beings, who taught Aboriginal people many of the skills they needed to survive in the bush. They also taught aspects of ceremony. Mimih spirits are believed to inhabit the rocky escarpments around Gunbalanya but because they are extremely timid, they are rarely seen by humans. They are frequently depicted in the rock art of Arnhem Land as small, dynamic figures, often shown with a range of hunting tools such as spears, spear throwers, dilly bags and fire sticks.

Artist
Gabriel Maralngurra is a Kunwinjku artist from Gunbalanya, a remote community in Western Arnhem Land. He was among the founding members of Injalak Arts in the late 1980s, and continues to be a driving force behind the art centre today. Painting at Injalak since 1989 Gabriel’s artistic practice is reflected in the breadth and depth of the subjects he paints, his fluent linework and highly original compositions.

In 2015, NORTH began as a mechanism to make viable the trade of hand-screen printed textiles from remote art centres to the interior design market. Through collaboration and being guided by the excitement and hopes of artists they were working with, NORTH evolved into a fashion label.
